The Glencoe Mill Village Historic District was created in 1999 to preserve the history of this area. On 5th October 1999, the Glencoe Mill Village was created by Burlington City Council. The village is a great spot for history lovers and outdoor enthusiasts with many preserved buildings from past centuries and modern-day ones.
The District is a registered historic district under Burlington’s City jurisdiction. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and has been an Alamance County landmark since 1997.
The historic district consists of a cotton mill complex and associated worker housing community, which were built on 105 acres along the Haw River between 1880 and 1882. These buildings house many historical treasures dating back more than 100 years.
Glencoe is a great example of what life was like in the late 19th century, when these villages were at their most populous. The village offers visitors an immersive experience into one such mill town’s everyday culture and society, which has been beautifully preserved for future generations to enjoy.
